FAQ

How do you endorse candidates?

GUSD Parents for Public Schools has backed winning candidates in the past two election cycles: 2022 and 2024. Yet turnout remains below 50% (and sometimes below 20%) in most of Glendale. We believe everyone has a stake in strong public schools. We are not a 501c4 or 501c3, we are just a group of people who organize to win elections when needed.

We are all volunteers who support candidates and propositions that benefit public schools. Candidates are welcome to approach us. We endorse based on our relationships with candidates and their public profiles. We don’t have questionnaires, we don’t do interviews, and we don’t care how little money you raise - we care if you’ll do the work to win and once elected, will support the following positions. (And if you abandon these values after election? Expect us in the following election cycle.)

  • support all students, especially historically marginalized groups like Black and Latine students, LGBTQ+ students, English Learners and refugee students.

  • pro-union (except police unions)

  • demand accountability for charter and private schools (we will never support voucher schemes)

  • support decades of established public health guidance, including childhood immunizations

  • support gun control measures

  • support literacy (we oppose book bans and are skeptical of Ed Tech grifters).

Who were the people at the protests in GUSD?

Proud Boys, far-right extremists, people without children in GUSD, and/or parents who are falling for targeted far-right online disinformation campaigns make up the bulk of the people at our recent protests.

We have also seen a handful of parents who advocate for homeschooling at GUSD Board meetings this spring and at community events this summer. You can see more on-the-ground coverage of the June 6th event here.

The Glendale Extremist Network has been tracking anti-public education and anti-democracy movements locally.

Do they represent most GUSD parents’ beliefs?

No. The majority of actual GUSD parents, teachers and Glendale residents who support public education have consistently showed up in support of existing GUSD’s fully transparent policies and procedures.

Because we are parents and not paid protesters, and many of us fear for our children’s safety, the louder side is more visible on corporate media coverage.

This outsiders’ circus has targeted our town and has taken our community’s focus off of actual GUSD students who need to be learning in a safe environment. GUSD and the city of Glendale are spending tens of thousands of dollars on Public Records Act Requests and additional policing for Board and City Council meetings.

Is there any truth to the allegations about what is being taught?

No. Everything is false.

The lies these people are spreading is the same disinformation we have seen spread in Chino Valley Unified, Temecula Unified, and at Saticoy Elementary protests in LAUSD. In fact, many of the same people repeating the same lies have been seen at each of these protests.

Worse still, these extremists have been mocking courageous students who speak out for inclusion and tolerance by circulating their images online (this is against the law). Community members have been followed home from board meetings after giving supportive public comments. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. If you see something or have questions at your specific school site, your first line of action is talk to the teacher and/or principal.

Where can I learn more?

You can read all of the Glendale Unified School District’s policies at their website. Beyond that, this site is a good resource for community members who want to understand how and why GUSD is being targeted by extremists.

How can I help? Share, vote, engage!

Share this information with your friends and neighbors.

It’s up to us to spread the word that GUSD, like all public school districts in the state of California, is following the laws and policies governing public education curriculum requirements and students’ and parents’/guardians’ rights.

Our five-member school board and superintendent are dedicated parents and community members who are committed to protecting every child’s right to learn in a safe, inclusive environment.

Make a plan to vote in City Council and School Board elections. These local elections matter so much, and turnout is historically below 40%. The next elections in Glendale are June 2nd, 2026.
