Hey Glendale! Our next election is June 2nd.
The work starts now. Scroll down for candidates.
School Board elections choose the people who govern our district. A well-governed school district benefits our entire community. Glendale’s kids must be able to live in a functioning, literate, and inclusive community.
Issues facing Glendale Unified include:
Trump closing the Dept. of Education, eliminating millions of dollars of federal funding for our district that supports everything from English Learners to Special Education to students experiencing poverty and homelessness.
MAGA cuts to Medicaid reimbursements for students with disabilities, which means these students will lose protections and services to which they are legally entitled.
ICE raids in our community causing children and families to avoid school.
Challenges recruiting and retaining talented teachers in this environment.
Ongoing legal threats from extremists who want to further undermine GUSD by draining budget and exhausting resources.
Cybersecurity and AI in our schools and district.
Pitch in! Contact us for a Glendale voter outreach kit.
We win when we reach out to our friends and neighbors in Glendale about the importance of quality public education!

ABOUT AILEEN:
“As a longtime resident of Area D and a proud mother of three, I am deeply invested in the future of our school district.
As a public health professional, we respond to emergencies. I feel a moral urgency to act — not just to talk about test scores or salaries, but to help build a district that can withstand the storms ahead and ensure a resilient future for our children and theirs. As a systems thinker, I have witnessed multiple institutions go through financial storms and make tough decisions. However, I am experienced in bringing in revenue, writing grants (as a grant-writer), and managing multi-million dollar budgets. The formula is simple, where can we lead, where can we support and where can we collaborate!”

MEET KATHLEEN:
“I’m running for a second term on this school board to continue serving the students and teachers in GUSD. These are challenging times to be in local office, and I believe I am the right person to help steer the district through the next four years.
Every decision I make as a board member begins where my journey started; as a parent who believes in doing what’s right for our kids and our community.”

MEET INGRID:
“I’m running for a second term on GUSD School Board.
As a parent of two GUSD grads, I know the challenges facing our students and want to continue to work on improving the student experience in our schools.
As an educator, I know firsthand the importance of working in good faith with organized labor in public school districts. Our Glendale Unified community is only as strong as our relationship with our teachers, principals, nurses, librarians, custodians, assistants, aides, and other staff who work in our schools each and every day.”

MEET ALEK:
“I am a proud child of immigrants and a product of Glendale. I grew up in south Glendale near Maple Park. As a child I felt safe and free to walk wherever I wanted to go - whether it was to school, Troy's Burger on the corner, or auto dealerships on Brand Blvd to check out my favorite cars. Later, we moved to northwest Glendale, and after living in downtown Glendale through my 20's and most of my 30's, I now live back in northwest Glendale just a few blocks away from my family. In so many ways, Glendale shaped who I am - this is, and always has been, my community.
That is why my campaign lays out a vision centering community at the core of our city's policies. In an era of divisive national politics and online echo chambers, in the midst of an unprecedented epidemic of loneliness, I believe the only way forward is to strengthen our local community. Let's come together in the real world, get to know our neighbors, and make Glendale a place we can all be proud to live, work, and raise our families. A place where we all feel we belong.”

An economist by training and now at the end of his first full term on council, Brotman has helped build momentum around a safer, more sustainable Glendale. He deserves another term with a council majority that can finally deliver on an affordable, greener Glendale for all. Brotman was often the sole councilmember speaking up in defense of our teachers and students during the extremist attacks on GUSD in 2022-2023.

A GUSD graduate, educator and tireless advocate for public education, Dr. Abajian is running for re-election. She is fearless in her support of immigrants, working people, LGBTQ+ community and is effective at running City Council meetings despite ongoing attacks on local government.
GUSD Parents for Public Schools has backed winning candidates in the past two election cycles: 2022 and 2024. Yet turnout remains below 50% (and sometimes below 20%) in most of Glendale. We believe everyone has a stake in strong public schools. Current GUSD Board members are committed to following state and federal laws governing public education. All four recently-elected Board members ran on broadly popular platforms dedicated to student support and success, including providing our teachers with fair compensation.
We are all volunteers who support candidates and propositions that benefit public schools. Candidates are welcome to approach us. We endorse based on our relationships with candidates. We don’t have questionnaires, we don’t do interviews, and we don’t care how little money you raise - we care if you’ll do the work to win and once elected, will support the following positions:
support all students, especially historically marginalized groups like Black and Latine students, LGBTQ+ students, English Learners and refugee students.
pro-union (except police unions)
demand accountability for charter and private schools (we will never support voucher schemes)
support decades of established public health guidance, including childhood immunizations
support gun control measures
support literacy (we oppose book bans and are skeptical of Ed Tech grifters).
